This unique park got its start in 2002 as World Gardens Mondo Verde. Built on a 25 hectare site that used to be a mining area, it had a variety of gardens that represented many countries such as Italy, Japan, Morocco, Portugal, Britain, Russia, and more. With trees, plants, statues, buildings, and water features, each themed area was made to resemble gardens in other countries. It was also home to a huge indoor Tropics area. Due to poor attendance, the park went bankrupt after four years of operation, but it was purchased in 2007 by Klaas and Bert van der Honing, the brothers who owned the nearby Kinderstad Heerlen indoor Family Entertainment Center. Since then, the park has greatly expanded with the addition of a small zoo and an amusement park. After this transition, the park has been occasionally called Family Park Mondo Verde. The zoo has exotic animals such as tigers, lions, bats, lemurs, and a wide variety of small and large birds. The rides area has both dry rides and water rides.
