Sitting around 30 kilometers (20 miles) east of Paris, the Disneyland Paris resort consists of
the Disneyland Park, the Walt Disney Studios Park, a shopping complex, and seven hotels. Covering 4,800 acres (1,940 hectares), the
area was originally called the Euro
Disney Resort. It opened in April 1992, but it was initially plagued with a variety of problems. A combination of
poor attendance, a widespread recession, rising unemployment, and a clash of American and European cultures all caused financial
problems for the new park. A variety of changes, new rides, and a reorganization of the park's debts helped Disney Paris to survive its turbulent
first years. Among the changes, Euro Disney changed its name to Disneyland Paris in 1994, Disneyland Resort Paris in 2002, and back to
Disneyland Paris in 2009. When it first opened, the park was
owned by the publicly-traded Euro Disney SCA, but that was acquired by the Walt Disney Company in 2017.
The nearby Disneyland Paris - Walt Disney Studios Park opened in 2002.
