Galaxyland Amusement Park
West Edmonton Mall
Edmonton, Alberta Canada
West Edmonton Mall was the world's largest shopping mall from 1981 until 2004. It is still the largest mall in North America. It is home to the World Waterpark, North America's largest indoor water park, and Galaxyland, the world's largest indoor amusement park. The mall also has a sea lion show, an ice rink, a replica of the Santa Maria ship sailed by Columbus, three radio stations, a hotel, 20,000 parking places, and 700 restaurants and shops. The complex covers the equivalent of 48 city blocks.
The mall's amusement park was originally called Fantasyland, but was changed to Galaxyland in 1995 when the Walt Disney company won a lawsuit over the rights to the Fantasyland name. With the name change, the park added a "space age" theme and a "Cosmo" mascot.
