The Sahara Hotel and Casino opened in 1952. In 1961, the Del Webb Corporation purchased the Sahara and funded a $12 million hotel renovation. William G. Bennett purchased the property in 1995 and began a $100 million transformation project. The changes included a new Congo Showroom, NASCAR Cafe, Las Vegas Cyber Speedway, and the Speed roller coaster. The hotel today has 1,720 guest rooms and an 85,000-square-foot casino, but the NASCAR Cafe closed in 2011. After sitting dormant for a few years, the coaster was torn down in 2012.
