Prior to Dodonpa's opening, the world's fastest roller coasters were Superman The Escape at Six Flags Magic Mountain and Tower of Terror at Dreamworld. Both coasters, which were built by Intamin and were nearly identical, took seven seconds to accelerate passengers to 160 kilometers per hour (100 miles per hour). Dodonpa held the record as the World's Fastest Roller Coaster from its opening in December 2001 to May 2003.
