Tokyo Disneyland (東京ディズニーランド) was the first theme park built by Disney outside of the United States. Since it opened in 1983, the park has enjoyed tremendous success. Now part of the Tokyo Disney Resort, the park covers 115 acres near Tokyo's Haneda Airport (羽田空港, Haneda Kūkō). It is the only major Disney park not actually owned by The Walt Disney Company. It is owned by The Oriental Land Company which licenses the use of Disney intellectual property and characters from The Walt Disney Company. Tokyo Disneyland continues to be one of the most popular Disney parks with nearly 150 million visitors in its first decade of operation, which is more people than currently live in Japan! Tokyo Disney Resort's second park, the amazing Tokyo DisneySea, opened in September 2001 and is adjacent to Tokyo Disneyland.
