Universal Studios Florida opened in June 1990 with a promise to let guests "Ride the Movies.". It started as Universal Studios Escape and was a combination of a theme park and a working production with several soundstages used to film movies, television series, and other events. The Universal Orlando Resort presently covers over 500 acres and includes this park, Universal Islands of Adventure, the Universal Volcano Bay water park, and CityWalk. About 5 miles away, work is taking place on Epic Universe, Universal's latest theme park. The park used to be owned by Universal and the Blackstone Group, but Blackstone sold its stake in 2011. The parks are currently owned by NBCUniversal, formerly called NBC Universal Inc., the company that resulted from the 2004 merger of Vivendi Universal Entertainment and General Electric's NBC television network. While the theme parks show a heavy influence from both Universal Studios movies and NBC Television intellectual property, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter - Diagon Alley opened in 2014, replacing Jaws: The Ride boat ride.
