Volcano: The Blast Coaster
Volcano was one of the most unique coasters I had ever seen. For one thing, check out the myriad of support structures!
Volcano, 2,757 feet long and built by Intamin, was the first suspended coaster to have Linear Induction Motors (LIMs) provide acceleration. Unfortunately, this magnetic launch technology had its problems. Volcano was supposed to open at the beginning of the 1998 season, but it only operated for a few weeks at the end of the summer. Instead of having the large trains seen here, Kings Dominion and Intamin had to remove half the seats on each train because the LIMs only had enough power to reliably propel eight people at a time. It was strange to see the train with such large gaps between seats after every other row was removed.
