Magnum XL-200
Magnum XL-200 was designed by Ron Toomer and built by Arrow Dynamics in 1989 for the cost of $8 million. (That is nearly $16 million in 2017 dollars when adjusted for inflation.) And if you ask me, it was well worth every penny! Even today, Magnum is on a lot of Top 10 lists of best roller coasters. The Golden Ticket Awards listed it as the Best Steel Coaster three years in a row from 1998 to 2000, and it stayed in the Top Ten from 2001 until 2013. After nearly three decades of operation, they most recently listed Magnum in 15th place on their list of best steel coasters. There is probably a little nostalgia when enthusiasts and amusement industry experts rank Magnum so highly, but it does go to show how successful this new type of roller coaster has been.
