Pedroland Park
Dillon, South Carolina

South of the Border is a rest stop developed by Alan Schafer (1914-2001).  Located on Interstate 95 and U.S. Routes 301 and 501, it sits just south of the border between South and North Carolina.  Its mascot, Pedro the stereotypical Mexican bandido, graces hundreds of billboards located up to 200 miles away from the restaurants, gas stations and motel.  It started as a beer stand in 1949, but expanded when Schafer started selling Mexican trinkets after returning from a trip to Mexico.  Now there is a 165-foot tall Sombrero Tower, a couple of small rides, but there used to be one roller coaster that was Standing But Not Operating (SBNO) for nine years.
