Colossus
Colossus was built by the brief-lived
International Amusement
Devices company. It was one of just two wood coasters built by
IAD. The company traces its roots back to
1919 when Aurel Vaszin started the Dayton Fun House Company. He changed the name to
National Amusement Devices a few decades later.
The company changed its name to International Amusement
Devices in 1973, but went out of business just a few years later.
Colossus was featured in many television shows and movies during the last three deacdes. For example, when the Griswolds visit Walley World in the "National Lampoon's Vacation" movie, it was filmed on location at Magic Mountain. Colossus was called the the Screemy Meemy in that movie, and I still laugh every time I watch John Candy being forced to ride this coaster!
